The Lawrence Historical Society was formed on November 18,
1975 as a non-partisan, non-profit organization. The Society's purpose is to
preserve and promote the history of Lawrence Township.
The Society administers two historic houses in
Lawrence Township: the 1830 Port Mercer Canal House and the 1761
Brearley House. Activities include an annual meeting in February at Lawrence Town Hall and a June Open House at the Port Mercer Canal hose.
At the Brearley House, there are public tours on the first Saturday of every month, a May Fair, and a New Year's Eve Bonfire. The Society also presents an award each year to the outstanding history student at Lawrence High School and contributes to funding archeological activities by Lawrence Middle School students.
